Downsizing is a great way to save money in the long term. If you move to a new home and it’s smaller than your old one, you’ll typically have less of a mortgage to pay and it won’t cost anywhere near as much to try and heat the whole thing!

However, trying to squeeze your life into a smaller space can be a big problem. Trying to navigate packing up your current home when you know you won’t have room for everything you own can leave a pretty sour taste in your mouth. And that’s why we’ve put this post together.

If downsizing has gotten you into a packing quandary, here’s what to remember as you go through the process.

Get Exact Measurements of Your New Space

If you have exact measurements to work with, you’re going to have a much better idea of what will fit in your new home and what won’t. This will allow you to draw up a scaled floor plan layout that you can use to effectively plan out your new space without even being there or seeing it in person.

If you have access to your new home right now, be sure to head over as soon as possible and get these measurements. The more detail you have, the easier it’s going to be to separate the things you can keep and the things you need to shift when the time comes to pack.

Use Self Storage

You don’t need to have a clear idea of what you want to keep in time for moving out day. You can instead use a self storage service over the next few weeks as you settle in and find the perfect place for everything.

If you’re using a local removals service, it’s likely they offer a storage option as well. Get the removals company to store any items you’re not sure about, up to the point where you’re certain you either want to keep them or throw them, and you cut out the middleman of needing to find another service to do this for you.

This can make packing up and moving out a lot simpler and smoother. You don’t need to waste time by trying to cram all your stuff into your new space, and only then get the chance to phone around until someone agrees to take on the excess for a while!

List Unwanted Items Online

Now that you know there’s at least a few things you won’t be able to take with you, why not list them online and get some cash for them? You don’t have to just throw things away or donate them; if they’re in good condition and could be sued by someone else, you could sell them for a few pennies and top up your new home budget.

Moving to a smaller property needn’t be a problem. Use the tips above to help you pack up without any annoying and inconvenient problems slowing you down.
